FORUM 2006: Transitions

Enhance your membership by subscribing to additional services based on your specific interests. This year the topics include Sustainability and Urban Design and Planning. Through our partnerships with organizations like the Congress for New Urbanism, Urban Land Institute and others, you will receive access to extra resources to increase your knowledge in these subject areas.

FORUM is the annual meeting of the American Institute of Architecture Students. It provides students with the opportunity to learn about issues facing architectural education and the profession, to meet students and professors with common interests, and to interact with today’s leading architects. FORUM 2006 will be held December 29, 2006 - January 1, 2007 in Boston, Massachusetts. AIAS members receive a substantially reduced registration rate.

Crit, Journal of the AIAS

AIASinfo Newsletter

For over three decades, people have looked to Crit, Journal of the AIAS, as the only source of published student work from across the continent. The theme of each issue provides a dialogue of current issues in architectural education and the profession. Student projects are published in an effort to highlight the best of the best in architecture schools. Crit 61: Mobility will be published in April 2006.

The biweekly news letter keeps members of the AIAS community abreast of events, news, and opportunities. AIASinfo serves to disseminate information directly related to/affecting AIAS on the international, regional, and local levels. It is forwarded to all members via email. If you are not receiving it, please contact mailbox@aias.org.

Grassroots Leadership Conference

Emerging Professional’s Companion

Grassroots is the annual AIAS chapter leadership conference held each summer in Washington, DC. It provides training on how to be an effective leader, how to run a successful AIAS chapter and how to motivate and organize students at schools. AIAS leaders are also informed on important current issues and ideas relevant to architectural students, education, and the profession. This discourse set the future course for the organization. Grassroots 2007 will be held July 19-22 in Washington, DC.

The Emerging Professional’s Companion supports the intern in the IDP process, particularly in gaining credit. The EPC is updated for current practice models and expanded to include the varied paths that an intern or licensed architect may consider during his or her career in architecture. Designed to in crease support, involvement, and mentoring of firms, supervisors and mentors, all members of the profession can participate in learning oppor
tunities provided by the EPC. Normally $80, the EPC is free to all AIAS members.

AIA Convention & Exposition

Student Loan Program

AIAS members can attend for as little as $25. In 2007 the event will be held in San Antonio on May 3-6. Take advantage of more than 100 professional tours and continuing education seminars of world renowned architecture and architects, including environmentally sound green buildings, homes and offices of award-winning architects.

The Student Loan Consolidation Program enables anyone with more than $7,500 in outstanding Federal student loans (including PLUS loans) to reduce monthly student loan repayments and lock in a fixed rate. If you recently graduated and are still in your grace period (i.e., you have not started repaying your loans), you may be eligible to reduce your payments. Don’t delay–this special rate reduction could save you thousands of dollars.

NAAB Accreditation Teams

AIAS Honor Awards

Each year the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) looks for students to serve on NAAB visiting teams at schools up for accreditation review. Students who participate on NAAB teams provide an important perspective and help establish a good rapport with the respective school’s student body. Students who have participated on NAAB teams attes t that it is one of the most intense and meaningful opportunities for serious discussion about architecture and education issues. This opportunity is only available to AIAS members. Details about applying to be on teams for 2006 will be available soon.

Each year, the AIAS confers Honor Awards in the following categories: Chapter Honor Award, Chapter President Honor Award, Community Service Honor Award, Educator Honor Award, Special Accomplishment Honor Award and Student Research Honor Award. The Honor Awards were established as a means to publicly recognize individuals and chapters whose work exhibit an exemplary commitment to the education and development of architecture students and promoted the mission of the AIAS. The deadline to submit is April 5, 2006.
